This is Mary Payoczkowski, SBJC Teacher/Educational Services Professionals Recognition Program Selection
We asked Mrs. P to share with us a biography of her journey through the educational world. Here is what she shared: “After having two kids, I left the field of accounting to be home with them. I then became a PTA volunteer and substitute teacher. I have developed an innate passion for putting physical fitness, sports, and living a healthy lifestyle first. While serving as a substitute teacher, I observed that many of the students who were non-athletes did not want to participate in their physical education classes. Some were embarrassed; they were not good at sports while others did not want to be active. I decided to go back to school and obtain my Physical Education & Health Certifications from William Paterson University. I have had the honor of working at the South Bergen Jointure Commission since 2007. It has been a privilege working with the students, staff, and families. Anyone that walks into our building notices the culture that embodies warmth and a willingness to help. My goal is to create inclusive health and physical fitness programs while increasing the levels of enthusiasm among all students.
Our students have always been at the core of everything I do. Four years ago, I initiated the intramural program which bridged a gap to the content of what was being taught in class to real-life experiences set in general education schools. Another asset for our students’ has been our involvement with the PGA Golf Program, NJ Devil’s Healthy Hat Trick Program, the American Heart Association “Hoops for Heart Program,” and inviting Police Officers from the community to present to our students on various topics, such as Bullying, Cyber-Bullying, Peer Pressure, Drugs etc.
Throughout the years I have pursued professional development opportunities to further my knowledge in creating inclusive activities for our student population.
When not in school, I enjoy boot camp, kick-boxing, spin classes and travelling. In the summer, I supervise a K-2 summer camp program. I also enjoy spending time with my family, including my three puppies!”
