No Barriers Initiative
How are we going beyond academics to challenge our students to live full and independent lives?
The SBJC has researched and implemented new programming to help our students to mitigate their challenges, resulting in the development of learning strategies that support students on their path to living full and independent lives. This new program has dramatically increased social opportunities that reinforce life skills which promote independence. The SBJC partnered with the non-profit organization No Barriers USA and its founder, Erik Weihenmayer (first blind person to climb Mt. Everest), in formalizing a theoretical framework that engages students in exploring new activities, showing them that “what’s within them is stronger than what’s in their way.”
Yoga & Mindfulness
The SBJC recognizes the profound impact mindfulness and yoga can have on a student's well-being. Our dedicated instructors integrate these practices into the curriculum, empowering students to cultivate emotional regulation, enhance cognitive function, and sharpen focus. Through techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and gentle yoga poses, students learn to manage stress, improve concentration, and develop a positive mindset. By fostering a sense of calm and centeredness, we aim to create a supportive learning environment that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit of every student.
All Kids Learn How to Bike
Our Bike Program, developed in collaboration with physical educators, therapists, and district leaders, is more than just a cycling initiative. By integrating cycling into our Maywood Campus Physical Education curriculum and teaching every student to ride confidently, we are empowering them with a lifelong skill that promotes physical health, mental well-being, and environmental sustainability. Bicycling fosters independence while also providing a fun and efficient mode of transportation.
Middle and High School Athletics
SBJC's 3-Season High School Athletics program, encompassing Cross Country, Bowling, Basketball, and Track & Field, goes beyond the playing field. By nurturing our Lodi Campus students' athletic abilities, we simultaneously cultivate essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Our program is designed to foster a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally, while building strong social bonds and a sense of community.
